Melyik a kedvenc színdarabod Tőle?

Bár Wilde a legtöbb ember számára komédiáival tett szert hírnevére, mégis én azt mondom, engem egyetlen tragédiájával, a Saloméval fogott meg. Mikor elolvassa először az ember, nem is tudja, mit mondjon róla. Legalábbis én nem tudtam. Annyira más, mint azok a színdarabok, amihez hozzászoktunk, mégis érezzük, ez csak emeli nagyságát. A szépségről beszél, mégis borzongat; a szerelmet viszi színre, de halállal végződik. Ahogy Salomé is mondja a dráma végén: „És a szerelem titka nagyobb, mint a halál titka...”
Wilde 1891-ben írta meg, az első komédiái után, de még a leghíresebbek előtt. Párizsban keletkezett franciául – az ember azt gondolhatja, ilyen mívű darab csak ezen a nyelven íródhat. Lord Alfred Douglas (vagy, ahogy mindenki ismeri, Bosie) fordította le angol nyelvre. A végén viszont Wilde annyira átdolgozta ezt a fordítást, hogy Bosie ragaszkodott hozzá, ne is jelenjen meg a neve a kiadásban. Mára már mindenki őt ismeri fordítóként.
Kár volt is ezen ennyit vesződni. A ’30-as évekig be volt tiltva a színdarab Angliában (Franciaországban rajongtak érte), ezek után viszont hatalmas sikereket aratott egész Európában. Richard Strauss operát készített belőle 1905-ben.
Mégis mitől olyan nagy ez a mű? Annyival le lehetne írni a történést, ha nagyon akarjuk, akár durva nyelvezettel is: jön egy kis keleti csitri, vonaglik egy órát a színpadon, majd nevelőapjától kéri a szent próféta fejét – na de ezüsttálon! Oscar e történések mögé fest egy tragédiát – elfojtott szexualitással (Heródes kívánja Salomét; Salomé Keresztelő Szent János testére vágyakozik; és emögött még mindig megbújik Heródiás különös személye, akit bár gyönyörűnek írnak le a források, mégis szenvedhetett attól, hogy lánya máris elhalványítja sikerével). Ezen kívül ott vannak az örökös wilde-i képek: az elmaradhatatlan gránátalma-szimbólum, a hármas szám megtörhetetlen szentsége, és a megszokott túlzások, ismétlések, cifrák, ékkövek, nemesfémek, tonnányi méretekben. Wilde ezzel rakta oda a maga kézjegyét a darabba.
„SALOME SZAVA. Ah, megcsókoltam az ajkadat, Jochanán; megcsókoltam a szádat. Keserű íze volt az ajkadnak. Véríze volt?... Nem, talán szerelemíze volt... Azt mondják, a szerelem keserű... De mi haszna, mi haszna? Megcsókoltam a szádat, Jochanán, megcsókoltam a szádat!”
